choppy Sound in RH 8

I recently installed RH 8 on my old pentium and note that the sound is messed up. After running sndconfig the test message while there cut out early. The cd player works fine but programs like xmms play double sounds. Each sound is played twice at least. Systems sounds also play repeatedly. Sounds in KDE do not play at all.

Thanks in advance
