I have been waiting for over two years ans wonder if I will have upgraded before proper ACPI support arrives! ACPI works perfectly in the OS that dare not speak its name on my Compaq. I have ACPI running in Linux but, in practice it is worthless.
It has seriously hampered my progress with Linux as it just is not practical to run a laptop without power management, standby or hibernate.
What is your problem exactly?
Forgive me if it sounds stupid or simple but in kernel prior to 2.4.6 (beta), you need to switch "Power Management" on plus all the acpi options.
L
acpi alone doesn't do much... you need acpi scripts to handle the power management functions... acpi works great for me on my Inspiron8500... equal to windows except battery life when watching a dvd.
understand that the kernel ACPI in the kernel is under development, and this means that ACPI will not work the same in every laptop, and in some laptops it will work very well. It is simply luck wheter your laptop has extended ACPI support supported by the kernel. All I know is that soon, acpi is about to get very good. Just like with USB....kernels 2.4.x up to like 2.4.16, USB support sucked big time. Now, it works flawlessly. And remember that 2.4.x will not support suspend or hybernate, so we need to wait for 2.6.x
and, if you go to the acpi.sourcefourge.net site, it actually RECOMMENDS you to wait for builtin kernel support, and it indicated that you won't need their patched once full acpi support comes builtin in the kernel.
