Originally posted by bolinux Check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/ for a list of laptops that will and will not work with linux. I have an IBM and there have been some problems but htey have been worked out. IBM has good laptops but they be sort of a hassle to get everything up and running. Avoid some cheap laptops that have things such as win-modems and cheap hardware that you may find on sale at circuit city.
What would you consider a cheap laptop because in most retail stores now there is only Sony, Toshiba, HP, Compaq and Acer. Did i miss something? I myself am in the market for a laptop but i am trying to come to grips with what is the best way to go. Toshiba seeing how i work for Compusa and can benefit quite well from various tap and screen protectioni plans or IBM X31 thinkpad since there are so many users out there of this particular brand.
If you want my 2 cents, this appears to be the most professional of the Linux laptop web sites that I have ever come across. If I was in the market right now for a new laptop this is where I would look first time, every time, even though they are in the USA and I not.
Must be it, yes! Great website though I bet nobody knows about it which is a shame!
Unfortunatly, no review for my model, satelitte 5000-105, which I am not surprised as it seems hardly anyone bought one (apart from me).

I have a compaq presario 1200 sitting around (P3). I want to get into linux and figured I could use my compaq labtop as practice, till I can get another machine. Should I attempt to install mandrack 9.1 linux on my compaq presario 1200 Labtop?

Have a Panasonic Toughbook T1, small, light. 12" screen, single spindle machine. Mandrake 9.1 installed on it no problem.
Usb2, sound, modem(slmdm module) all work. Haven't tried the pcmcia yet though.
Toshiba is more popular in stores, but Fujitsu is making some high tech stuff! that works very well under Linux, and besides
Fujitsu laptops are waaay better looking and sleek looking than Toshibas, heheheh
I'll post a website to where you get Fujitsu laptops Linux how-to.
I actually am posting the How-to for my laptop, Fujitsu Lifebook C2210, in the fujitsu how-to, since I've gotten everything working now. 2.4.22 kernel fixed most of the acpi, eventhough we wont have Suspend support until probably kernel 2.6.x
someone mentioned the acpi.sourceforge.net site so that you can get better acpi support....well you will eventually use the kernel acpi support because it is just better than using this acpi.sourceforge.net applets. So guys, just wait for acpi kernel support!!

Build in kernel support is certainly not better in 2.4.22! I have tried to use it on my toshiba s 5000-105 and at first reboot, the computer would freeze and print errors until I reboot it..
Installed the patch from acpi.sourceforge.net, and it works first go!
