CD drive "forgets" that discs are there

This situation has crippled my live-CD distro-hopping days.

It started when I first installed Ubuntu 9.10 nearly a year ago. Every so often, I would insert a CD or DVD and the drive would "forget" that it was there, neither recognizing it nor allowing me to eject (even with the eject command). I was using amd64 and switched to i386, which seemed to solve the problem.

I installed openSUSE 11.2 KDE shortly after Ubuntu and had no issues with the CD drive.

Fast forward to today. I have tried to install three different distro's, and two (suse and Ubuntu) have failed because the CD is "forgotten" about halfway through. I can install PCLinuxOS, but only because I copy it to my RAM before installation. I cannot burn .iso's with any program.

I have dusted out the drive, reset manufacturer defaults in the BIOS, removed the battery...

Odd. Here is the output of 'eject' after inserting a blank dvd:

eject: unable to find or open device for: `/dev/cdrom'

And indeed, /dev/cdrom is gone, even though it was there earlier...
