Cannot select OS in GRUB

Hi,
I have XP and Fedora Core 2 dual boot on my laptop. The GRUB was working fine for a period of time. But now something wrong happened. In the screen where GRUB asks to choose OS, I cannot choose anything with the arrow keys. I have to let it timeout and goes into Fedora.. If I pressed any arrow-keys before the count-down started, GRUB will just simply freeze!!!!

I can solve the problem temporary buy running "/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda", but the same problem appear again after my laptop is power off and then power on (it works after reboot).

Please advise me to fix this problem.

the following is the current grub.conf file
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,6)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda8
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,6)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.6.6)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.6.img
title Fedora Core (2.6.5-1.358)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
title Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Fine, boot into Fedora. It is now bad if you can access one of your systems.

Ok so you are in Fedora. Open a console (terminal).

Switch to root:

su
<your root password here>
/sbin/grub

You are now in grub command line.

The commands you type in here are:

root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0)
quit

this will reinstall grub files on your boot partition, because there may be something wrong with them.

grub-install only installs grub into MBR, but it doesn't change the grub files. Hope this saves your troubles.

Good luck!

Peace!

thank you very much for your reply, marghorp. I turned on my laptop today, it doesn't even start the count-down. I started to suspect my USB mouse. After I unplug the mouse and reboot, the problem is gone!!?!?!?! the existence of the USB mouse blocked the key board completely.

But marghorp's approach is really systematic..I like it, thank you.

However, what the hell is wrong with my mouse? my USB? My Logitech optical mouse got some problem (have some problem with dragging) and retired, now the new mouse doesn't seem to move well. Will Linux be the source of the problem? I hope not.

Try dosabling USB Legacy support in BIOS. That pesky little thing had been giving me headaches in FC2 for two days, before someone told me that the option in BIOS is the cause of all the problems. Just let Linux take care of everything.

Good luck!

Peace!
