Cannot right click on Desktop

Using Ubuntu netbook remix on a Eee PC.

I was having problems before with my top and bottom bars disappearing and being able to open a terminal nor would Alt+F2 work.

So I did a fresh install.

Now I cannot right click on the desktop, no options show up. I can still right click on folders and files. FYI, my desktop has nothing on. That is how I came to this. I need to put a something on the desktop as a shortcut or whatever it is called.

I switched desktop modes, and then switched back and now I right click again.
