Can not turn on WiFi card in Ubuntu 8.10 in my hp dv5 laptop
 

Hello,
I have a hp dv5 laptop and I have both Ubuntu and Vista installed in it. The problem I have is, I can not turn on the WiFi card(Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN) in Ubuntu if I had turned it off from Vista by pressing the Wireless Button.

As Wireless cards consume lot of power I tend to turn it on only when I needed it. So not being able to turn on the card through Ubuntu is of little pain to me. I think similar problem has happened to most of you.

So please give a suggestion for this.

I will try to help. Is the correct driver installed for this card? Check with the driver utility in the Admin list and see if you need a proprietary driver for this particular card. That could be the problem. Most HP/Compaq's that I have seen have been supported fairly well, meaning that most of the function buttons work. Especially with Ubuntu. Also, make sure you have the most recent updates.

Kubuntu didn't work with my HP laptop. I switched....
 

I spent a lot of time trying to get my wireless card going on two of my laptops, using Kubuntu, but had no success. So I switched to PCLinuxOS. It has all the codecs and non-free applications to make your wireless card work. I'm writing this on one of those laptops right now. Ubuntu tries to be a pure Linux, and therefore, you have to work real hard to get your wireless running. The necessary applications to make it work are not easily attainable. Perhaps it's time to switch to a distro that's not afraid to include the non-free applications to make your life easier?

(K)ubuntu is a fine distribution for desktop machines, but kind of lousy for wireless usage. Save yourself some pain, try a different distro.

this may be a stupid question but do you have wireless enabled?
if you click on the networking symbol on the top menu bar does it
have a check next to "enable wireless"?

are you using WEP or some other wireless protocol?
do you have the correct WEP key?
I have to use the first wep key for some reason Ubuntu doesnt
recognize the second, third and fourth keys.

Thanks for the replies. The thing is my wifi card is identified by ubuntu and I can connect to internet when the the card is turned on without any problem. The problem is in hp laptops, there is a separate button above keyboard to turn on the card. My OS does not identify it. That means I can't turn on/off wifi.
(I have both Vista and ubuntu.If I turned the card in vista, then no problem. But if it's off in vista, I can not get turned it on in Ubuntu)

@Vanessa: I have enabled wireless and there is no need of using a WEP key.

Any help???
