can't login

I have a new laptop and have loaded linux. Linux loads fine. But at the login in prompt I am unable to use the keyboard. According to control panel in xp keyboard is ps2. What could be the problem? I have tried other solutions suggested in previous posts.

knoppix makes a great rescue CD. Boots from the CD and runs from RAM disk but allows you to access your hard drive.

Sounds like Linux isn't identifying the keyboard correctly (unless you've dropped it and knocked something loose ).

Do you have a full-sized keyboard you could plug into the laptop (ps2 or usb ports on back I assume)?

What distro and laptop are you running?
