Question can't hear sound without earphone


i have install fedora 4 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 6000.The sound card is
Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBW/FR/FW(ICH6 Family) AC'97 audio controller.It's driver is
snd-intel8x0. i can only hear sounds from the earphone when i listen a song,and i can't hear
without the support of earphone.Why? Can anybody help me?

Maybe your line-out is muted? Supposing you use Alsa, try entering "alsamixer" at the console. If the volume bar of the Master channel is empty, push it up to, say, 75 (might have to press M first to un-mute it), exit the program and enter "alsactl store".

Of course, the problem might be an entirely different one, but I think it's worth a try.

i configure Volume Control in graphic mode.It is suddently OK .I don't know why.But it works well now.
Maybe i had forgotten to save changes made before.Also thanks for your help.

For the benefit of others who had this problem, you need to enable "External Amplifier" in the mixer.

i just found my HP v3172 laptop can't hear any WITH a earphone.
Maybe i forget to enable the External Amplifier.
But how to enable it?
In the graphic mode or alsamixer??
