Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Can't get X to start Thinkpad R51 w/ ATI Radeon Mobility 7500
I've attached my lspci, Xorg.0.log, and xorg.conf and I'm seeking help getting X to start on this IBM R51 with the ATI Radeon Mobility 7500. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper. Oddly enough, every was working on a clean install but after installing system "upgrades" and rebooting, now X won't launch. I could reinstall, but then I'll be in the same boat during the next upgrade...any help is appreciated! xorg.conf

your xorg.conf is quite a bit different than mine so... have you compared this one with a backup xorg.conf~
also, in the upgrade was there a kernel upgrade? meaning a new compile of the driver.
as well i've got a wide screen and this post is still dbl wide. very hard to go through.
I guess i'll work on my post eticic. I've just seen so many post while searching for a solution that DIDN'T include these three files, I thought I would post them....
The upgrade did appear to be a kernel upgrade as I've got new entries in my GRUB.
I've tried the backup xorg.conf with no luck.
If you have this graphics adaptor, can you post your xorg.conf so I can compare?

NO i have Nvidia and on my other laptop ibm A21m is an ati but its' xorg.conf looks similar (im on Suse BTW)
I may be wrong, but what concerns me is the lack of identifiers i.e
Device "Device[0]"
Identifier "Screen[0]"
Monitor "Monitor[0]"
if u notice i have 2 mice; mouse[0] and mouse[1] and 1 keyboard; keyboard[0]
the same follows for my monitor and its device, i.e card,
you'll see that near the end. your xorg.conf.bak looks the same as thisone you've posted? and i don't mean for you to substitute
it for the one in use, only compare them to see what has changed.
None the less, if kernel was updated and Ati was not (assuming its anything like Nvidia)... and now you have no X....
I have the identifiers, they're just not in the same place as yours:
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 9000]"
Monitor "LCD"
I tried moving them to the same location you had with no luck.
The backup of xorg.conf is dated after this problem began, after the kernel upgrade. I compared them, but nothing was actually different.
When launching 'startx' the only error I get is: (EE) No devices detected still. And of course the mass error log is posted above...

well I was going to suggest the dpkk-reconf thing too but whats getting me is that loading dies and give the (EE) at the point the card is probed ( now that the post is reformatted i can see everything) sooo.. does your distro pipe an err log to tty 10 (cntrl+alt+f10) ? Any thing there? Cus now im not sure if its a hardware detection thing or something got bumped from the boot with the update.
Or simply the pointers in the conf are compleatly messed up -hence the -reconfigure should have worked. :-(

Ubuntu xorg-server update breaks X: "no screens found"
Wednesday August 23, 2006 (01:10 PM GMT)
By: Joe Barr
IRC channels, LUG mailing lists, and Ubuntu wikis were buzzing with the news this morning that a recent Ubuntu Xorg update (xorg-server 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3) crashes the X Window System on some video hardware. When X is restarted following installation, affected Ubuntu users get a "no screens found" error message instead of X.
