Camcorder not detecting through firewire port.

I recently tried to connect my Panasonic Camcorder to my linux laptop using firewire port (4 pin to 4 pin cable). But after connecting, nothing happened.

I have no idea what's happening. Any pointers? How do I go about troubleshooting? This is the 1st time I am using the firewire port, so I am not sure whether there's anything wrong with the h/w or is it incompatibility with the camcorder.

Laptop - Dell Inspiron 6400, FC11.
Camcorder - Panasonic MiniDv GS85.

what exactly did you expect to happen ? did you do anything beyond just connecting ? for example starting kino and check if it sees the camcorder.

A startingpoint for troubleshooting would be the output of

dmesg | tail -20

after you connected the camcorder.

Thanks buddy,

I check dmesg and got the following :

firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5
firewire_core: created device fw1: GUID 00804580d192a198, S100
firewire_core: created device fw1: GUID 00804580d192a198, S100
firewire_core: phy config: card 0, new root=ffc1, gap_count=5

Later I got help from here and was able to capture the video.
