Booting off a firewire cd drive

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2805-s503, and the cd drive on it is unbearably slow. I want to know if its possible to boot and install linux from a cd-rw drive connected through firewire. I assume I have to boot off a floppy and mount something, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with all that. Can someone tell me how to do that, or where to get a floppy image?

Firewire+linux=bad... lol
A usb 1.0 drive, pretty good chance as my usb floppy always works.. but firewire is iffy...
Its a different story if you plug in the drive and it shows up on the bootup screen like my floppy does, then, the support is built in to the computer and linux can recognize it
