Hey everyone, i'm running slackware 11 on my dell latitude c600. Everything's fine except sometimes it takes a long time, up to five or more minutes, to boot, and sometimes it will not boot at all. Everytime, the point that takes long is at the line dhcpcd: mac address <x>

I am using a wireless card with ndiswrapper which i am modprobing and connecting to network automatically in the files /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf

i'm using the 2.4.33.3 kernel

Hmmm, a little tacky but you can try using an ampersand in that line, dont you think so?

I have had similar problems with several laptop systems when I boot when not connected to a wired Ethernet connection. The system hangs until it times out waiting for eth0.

To fix this, go to /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and edit the file as root. Look for the following section near the top of the file:

# Config information for eth0:
IPADDR[0]=""
NETMASK[0]=""
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_HOSTNAME[0]=""

Just remove the "yes" from the "USE DHCP[0]" line so it looks like this:
USE_DHCP[0]=""

This should solve your hang at boot.

I use Dropline Gnome and on laptop systems I let NetworkManager make the network connection. NM will select the wired or wireless network connection automatically depended on what is available.

Slackware's DHCP stuff can have a really long wait time if you don't have an active connection or something is misconfigured with the interface.

You may want to try adding something like:

DHCP_TIMEOUT[0]="10"

To the rc.inet1.conf and see if it helps speed things up. Alternately, you may want to think about coming up with a new way to initialize the interface.

using the timeout seemed to speed it up a bit, but changing the use_dhcp made it quite a bit quicker. Now i'll just change it if i need to use wired
