Angry Boot & Login Problems

I just bought an HP 2133 Mini-Note w/ SUSE Linux Enterprise Edition. When I boot my laptop, now all I get is a text-based login prompt instead of the normal login screen. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Check your default runlevel in your inittab file. Look for an entry like this
Code:
id:5:initdefault:
Make sure it is set to 5. You will need to edit this file as root if you need to make changes. Take a backup of your inittab file first before proceeding.

Hi, in case you need a gui to check those settings...

type startx at the prompt.

If that does not work, try

init 5 and wait for the login screen to display.

Then you can set the defaults in the config manager they use with suse.

Typing startx get me to the regular graphical screen, except that the resolution is messed up. I couldn't find the inittab file using the config manager. Typing init 5 didn't work at all. Thanks for your help. Now at least I can get a gui. Any other suggestions on how to get my notebook back to normal?

Refer to the X driver man pages and the
chipset-specific READMEs in /usr/lib/X11/doc for further details

to reset the display...

xorgconfig

answer the questions best you can, and follow the directions.

Hope this helps

screen

Suse has a specific progam to sort out screen resolution called SaX2.
Go to a terminal>
su>
root password>
init 3>
wait a while then type:
sax2 --vesa 800x600
This should run sax2
Follow the prompts to change the res.
once finished type:
init 5
to change back to the x server.

Fred.
ps the > means press enter

Welcome to LQ!!

Did this notebook (netbook) come this way? If so, I am surprised HP would do such a thing. Also, I would call HP directly.

I recommend that you edit the first post to remove your e-mail address. You are inviting a major spamming.
