Best Linux Distro for an older Laptop

Hi,

I hope this is the correct forum to ask this. I have an older laptop that I bought when I first started college. It has been running Windows 8.1 and I do not want to pay to upgrade to 10. I would like to try to see how Linux works for me as a daily OS. I did some research and have been trying out Ubuntu-mate 18.04.02 but I am not sure I am very fond of it. I was wondering if someone could help point me in the right direction or if anyone had any preferences. Here are my laptops specs.

ASUS Q550LF-BBI7T07
Intel i7 4th Gen 1.80 GHz
8 GB RAM / 1 TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 745M

That aint no OLD laptop lol
You could install multiple distros on that man.
I like Slackware myself but right now I have MX linux, Arconlinux and Slackware 14.2 on my dell with 3gb ram 180gb hdd
I used to be into Ubuntu when a newbie but not now.
Just matters what you want it for? Or do you wanna learn linux too?
I recommend Slackware, Arch, or any Debian derivative like Ubuntu.

Hahaha. I've had it for about 5 years so I suppose its old to me, but specs are definitely not bad. I am sort of looking for something to be a decent daily workstation for school but that also allows me to learn Linux at the same time. I will check out the ones you suggested thanks a lot!

SmaxBang,

Hello to LinuxQuestions. Looking forward to your posts.

This month I uploaded Ubuntu 18.04.1. For my needs it is doing just well. Ubuntu 18.04 has it advantages and disadvantages. From what I am learning (and I am still learning so please bear with me if I change my tune), Ubuntu 18.04 is limited when compared to other distros and its flavors.

Part of the reason why I like it is that I use Chinese for my work. The Chinese gcin it the 'Applications' installation went good and so far it is very stable. As long as the Chinese gcin software continues to work well I will use it.

What I am trying to get across is that if Ubuntu 18.04 can be made to fit your needs than it is fine. If you require special needs, or if you need to use software that is not in 'Applications' than you may not find it suitable.

Hope it goes well for you.
