Best laptops for performance in programming and data access

Hi.

I am interested to know if different laptop components actually make significant difference in performance for compiling and running C++ based code. (C++ based meaning using the root distribution for analysing data - see http://root.cern.ch).

For example is there any performance difference between amd and intel chips? There are lots of sites on installing linux on laptops, but I cant find any info on this topic (though if its out please tell me the url). Secondly is there a performance difference in reading data of the hard disk between different brands of hard disks, given they have the same specifications?

Thanks,

Mark.
