BCM43142 NIC of toshiba cl45 not recognized on bodhi install

I installed bodhi-5.0.0-64 on a resource constrained Windows 10 notebook (2GB RAM/32GB eMMC) as there was not enough storage to update Windows 10. Everything is running beautifully except for the networking.

sudo lspci -vnn | grep -i net

shows the notebook is using a Broadcom Limited BCM43142 802.11b/g/n

In addition to limited RAM and storage this notebook does not have an RJ45 port.

Anyone know how to get this working or if another distro includes the NIC driver?

Keep in mind I would have to somehow download drivers to a USB drive on a Windows PC and transfer the drivers to the bodhi notebook?

Thanks!

Welcome to LQ, luvbodhi.

Broadcom drivers can be tricky. The first thing to check is the status of the driver, and whether the firmware is in the kernel package supplied by bhodi. Around 2015 someone deleted a pile of firmware from the kernel thinking "Nobody uses that crap any more," - but they did, and do. Most distros give a firmware package which sorts this by providing antique firmware. Get busy with a search engine and see what you can find. Include 'linux' in the search terms to avoid windows search spam.

I've done some work on this but so far I've had no success. I addition to bodhi-5.0.0-64 I've downloaded and started the live versions of these distros but none connected to the Internet:

lubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64
ubuntu-mate-18.04.1-desktop-amd64
linux-lite-4.2-64bit
linuxmint-19.1-cinnamon-64bit
kubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64

The last, kubuntu, did not work but I found this reference:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2319377

Someone suggests copying the following files from the kubuntu distro to the linux /home/var directory and running the following command:

Files:
pool/main/d/dkms/dkms_XXXXX.deb
pool/restricted/b/bcmwl/bcmwl-kernel-source_XXXXX.deb

Command:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

This worked for the person in thread. I found the files and was able to run the command UNsuccessfully.

I encountered these dependency errors on Bodhi:

bcmwl-kernel-source depends on linux-libc-dev and libc6-dev

dkms depends on gcc

Any ideas on where I might find these three packages and their dependencies?

Maybe there is some tool out there which will allow me to download linux packages with yum/pacman, along with all their dependencies, into an archive which I can transfer to the notebook using a flash drive and install the packages.

The notebook is from 2016 so not too old but is underpowered for Windows 10 and all of its updates. I'm amazed at how responsive the UI is using Bodhi. It was quite responsive with Windows 10 but between no space for updates and laggy Comcast video taking up 100% of the CPU I just wanted to give Bodhi a try.

The solution for me was to install bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu4_amd64.deb and all of its dependencies.

Details are here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest....php?p=5942919
