bad sound

I have tried to watch videos and play music on my laptop only to get really low quality sound. The files are ok, compression is ok, speakers are fabulous (under winXP), but horrible sound, almost like NR needs turned on. any clues?

My sound was awful too, but fine under windows. Anything with bass didn't sound right. My problem was the sound was to loud going into my sound card. I turned the master volume down to about 70% and it sounded perfect. That could be your problem.
