Backspace" key won`t work in Red Hat 8.0

I am running Red Hat 8.0 on a Gateway 9300 Pro laptop. The "backspace" key does not work. RH 8 installed w/ no problems, except for this. Thanks to anyone for their help.

I just upgraded from RH8.0 to 9.0 on my Athlon PC, and have
the same problem. In an X-terminal window under Gnome, the backspace key (keycode 22,long key with a leftarrow) is dead !?

The key worked as it shoul under RH8.0. Also, it works in widows
opened by the Emacs text editor ?
