Hi to everyone !

It seems that many linux live-distributions can detect the UMTS_STICK I am using.
<hr></hr>
I have no idea how to activate it!

New : I tried kinternet running in Taskbar-Tray-Mode and it says there is modem0 and provider vodafone !
The error-konsole says modem not responding !
I also tried console command smpppd , rcsmpppd , pppd , cinternet and wvdial.
A magazine http://www.pcwelt.de/partner/heftarc...009_inhalt.pdf - Highlight
<ins> and better http://www.pcwelt.de/partner/heftarc...009_inhalt.pdf - Highlight </ins>
wrote an article about connecting Fonic UMTS-Stick avec these commands lsmod | grep option , modprobe and wvdialconf . I typed in some mistakes but in the end always the some error after typing command wvdial pin : refused or something like that.

Thanks for these hints !

The first hint may be very worthful ... same o´problems of course ... usb-mass-storage-theme ... just took a short look ... being fast means stress to me ...
Express-Cards and PCMCIA exists in several versions ... I think acer-Extensa-5230E is PCMCIA II ... First time I opened that slot I thought it would be some kind of external removable 1´8"-HDisk ... perhaps this "read about" zip-drive ......
While back on Vista I had to type PUK because of three wrong PINs while on SuSE ... could not find PUK in the papers ... tried Super-PIN ... was the right number-code ... I can remember days there were 2 PUKs ...
One link here at LQ took me to Australia ... There the password was explained as being a part of the phone-number ... don´t know if I should choose Username or Root as variable ... will try out more the next days ... on another site was told to plug in the stick after KDE-Desktop is in full loaded state ... three tries ... Vista ... three tries ... seems to become interesting days at easter ...

The LED at the stick turned from blinking doublegreen/pause to the steady blue light that says its turned on but there is no data flowing through the air (tyrquoise when receiving or sending data).

Firefox and Konqueror couldn´t connect to the WWW.
Saying DNS or firewall or proxy may be the cause .
I closed proxy and firewall at YAST and tried to fix DNS in YAST by sysconf-editor but without result:

linux-y4lx:~ #
I don´t know exactly what I changed at sysconf-editor...
I erased that /etc/resolv.conf -file and than the console-output said at the end ... something like couldn´t find etc/resolv-conf ... connection may not work ...

I tried to create it new by typing NetworkManager into console but it wasn´t created automatically new. Also Yast couldn´t save any changes at MODEM-editor for Kinternet.

This is Kinternet-log:

Kindly put different codes with proper indentation in different code tags, otherwise it will be difficult for others to read what you have written !

Lightbulb #!CRUNCHBANG 8.10.01-live solved worries !

Heyssa !

All of a sudden all worries are over !
I don`t want any sleepless nights anymore with speculating and opening somehow felt like thousands of console and editors

The connection-editor did well after the first troubled -due to little knowledge- use.

After the first short setup after system-start
right-click on taskbar-sign - chose »edit connections«.

Here the entries to the nm-connection-editor-GUI:

wired|wireless Mobile Broadband VPN|DSL
setup »vodafone« is shown, choose »Edit«, new board pops up :

This setup works; I am here with Firefox. The stick shines steady blue at the moment. Can you imagine, how I felt, seeing it shining turquoise first time ?
Whish me luck for the steady installation.
The second suse-eleven doesn`t run normal mode;failsafe works. I think I quit that producer...This time Xserver at start...only C+A+Del works...no other keys ...also halt-issues!
I also looked shortly at Debian 4 and 5 thought I would install these...but at the moment it tastes like mud, dirt and schmoletter-distribution-time for me ...
Mouse fine, internet fine: everything is fine!
AT Linux I feel : never stay at your distribution and never update as I roamed through the forums here...
To me SuSE 6.2+Debian3.1+aurox9.2 were fine to me; now it is
#! CRUNCHBANG 8.10.01 -- !# -time !!!!!!!

Also PHP-Lessons... very nice site you gave to visit, dear anishakaul!
.personalHomepage...

At the end one remark to my post nr.4 of this thread: The letter-turner at the second suse11version was no letter-turner anymore...!

Have a nice day and CrunchBang8.10.01live from PC-WELT-Linux 2/2009 is a very very good environment for Huawei K3715 from vodafone at acer Extensa 5230E. I would like to place one or two links of other providers and distributions but the bookmarks are all at my WindowsV and 7 brewbrowsers. Xandros should have a good working wizard for UMTS also ... of course... now i find only negative blogs about Xandros while serarching with out bookmark...
Have a nice day ! At the end I would like the idea of others leaving an exact note about good mobile Slateblock and Fetzbook distribution-versions !

Quick Reply :
Rome wasn't build at one day poeple say ....
btw (also something new to me by the way) phpBB is another new kind of Babylonian bracket-language. I only had 2 days C, two days in C++ and 2 days at html and css. I have not all commands at home too little money for all the books. Good books are somewhat thick and also lack sometimes a good and big glossary. I loaned HTML&XHTML·C.Musciano&B.Kennedy·O'Reilly and it seems to have all the commands and when I searched for "complete list of php commands" http://www.php.net is shown but it looks like there is no other knowledge-provider for php-tutorial at the moment and at phpbb there is no complete list! First I have to lecturize the extreme fails like wrong friting and such. Tomorrow University starts, I am at Laws but we have §133 at BGB that says that not the written word shall be followed but the true intention ... everything's relative ... the radios I have to fix next weekend (Why the hell they call circle radio ?? Radiesschen grow underearth here that red vegetable).

Installation succeded but on normal PC -but UMTS also works on PC

The executables «nm-applet» at the taskbar and «nm-connection-editor» are required at #! for UMTS-BB access. The filling in at the nm-connection-editor is shown at my post #7.
I got loaded #!CRUNCHBANG LINUX 8.10.02 and also tried two 8.04 versions. The 8.04 aren't having the nm-connection-editor.
I got the 8.10.02 installed on more robust PC PIII 650 MHz 319 MB RAM 4 GB Quantum HD Intel 440 Chipset.
The 8.10.01 version I have tried to create back to .iso from the DVD has 749 MB so I can not burn on CD.
The UBUNTU root/sudu - ideology is a theme for itself as it shows up at several forums here at Lq.org. I got fixed that at the 'users-admin' quite well now by creating root, admin, two users and some group and enabled root login at the login-screen also by setting down the minimum login-ID from default 1000 to 0.
I quit installing LINUX on laptop by installing to a stick because the USB-fittings don't seem to be really tight to be reliable. Also the correct drivers are needed! If it would be pre-installed by a manufacturer on hard-disk like f.ex. DELL does it seems to be o.k. Otherwise only use equipment you do not need badly.
I also got PUPPY LINUX 4.3.1 installed on another of my four partitions and could setup the internet connection using «pupdial», filling in the required attributes at its GUI with the magazine article I have. At Puppy the USB-modem seems has to be connected after finishing loading the X-desktop. Otherwise pupdial does not scan the modem; perhaps because of it's build in micro-SD-card-slot.
My Laptop now really does not start when I want it to and it is a theme at several acer-forums.I put it to 'sleep'-mode and found out that at 4400/4800 mAh-battery 35 to 32 % of capacity after 31 hours sleep-mode (not hibernate-mode) still remained. I must add further that I tried to find out about its warranty and detected that it was already registered for being sold the 20th May 2009. I bought it at ebay together with this UMTS-flat contract and have to find out about possibilities to cancel the contract. I have a delivery and order piece of paper dated Feb. 09. 2010. Hopefully I do not have to go to court for this.
I do not add [solved] for the moment because I want to do some editing the next days. It was a little confusing with (php),(code),(quote) tags at the beginning for me.

XUbuntu 9.10 .live :

nm-connection-editor is inside but does not show up at the menu.
invoked by xterm.

Just want to see if I get a brown or blue ubuntu-icon here.

I also tried LUbuntu but it was not clear if nm-connection-editor was available.

Looks like that Xfce is the item to look for while searching for UMTS/HSD/P/U/A capability; nor goddam or kdm.

I tried 15 to 20 700MB CD-diestrous until now and 95 to 99% have no UMTS.
Austrumi 1.8.5 perhaps. The editor there is »netbox« and has got a »GSM«-tab. It is a beautiful DSL with minor bugs at GUI crashing while changing the font-size.
Four of the distros could not be burned because of being to large.
The smallest was suse11.2-gnome of 693MB/709.632KB and the largest to fit on 700CD absolute 13.0.7 689MB/705.694KB (until now).
Installing absolute was pain : no UMTS and screen frozen. I got fixed it but absolute extracts 4 to 5 times on HD (700->3000 MB) so I sacrificed DSL, Puppy and #! and now there sits Debian-X with no UMTS on one boot and on one encrypted LVM with somewhat a minix3-installation that made /boot now not to be able to read the file-system (ufs) there anymore

All the Best!

CrunchBang 9.04.01 :

UMTS-internet is working but only when connect automatically is chosen at nm-connection-editor.!

I tried to get L-Ubuntu 10.04 to connect but it probably only could work with wvdial:
After some 'xterm sudo pcmanfm and sudo leafpad' wvdial connected but immediately disconnected. The LED changed the color from green to blue but kept blinking. Xterm said pppd Error Code (2) and at man pppd there are over 1000 lines to read so I quit that.
It was somewhat the same end like at suse 11.

Lightbulb modprobe -a option, modprobe -a usbserial most impotant for Broadband-UMTS

This should have been X-Ubuntu 10.04.
I downloaded it the first or second May and half the way my 5GB-limit was gone and it took perhaps 5 hours for the rest at 7-8KB/s ....
(But when I started Firefox there showed up "Welcome to 9.10" ...)
file:///usr/share/xubuntu-docs/about/xubuntu-index.html at the ?-sign at the taskbar.

But it is a little different.
The USB-Modem was not automatically detected. I rebooted in german language because the keyboards differ and after #! 9.04 I was not sure if things got worser at X-U too. A little reading showed up that the essential kernel-modules hadn't been automatically loaded:
I have problems to call a modem-module "option" !
And I get crissedcrossed by "setserial" and "usbserial"
And because of #! 9.04 I checked somehow automatically connect at "nm-connection-editor" (I think it becomes my favorite program of all linux) and after hitting enter all of a sudden the BB-icon at the top started to turn and the connection was there !!!!
Great !
Code:
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo lsmod | grep option
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo lsmod | grep setserial
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo modprobe -a setserial
WARNING: Module setserial not found.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo lsmod | grep usbserial
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo modprobe -a usbserial
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo modprobe -a option
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo lsmod | grep usbserial
usbserial 33019 3 option
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo modprobe -a option
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo lsmod | grep option
option 15654 2
usbserial 33019 6 option
ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop$
at least I found the proof: http://start.ubuntu.com/10.04/Google/
in the http-row.
[INS] And there is the icon "Install XUbuntu 10.04" [/INS]
[INS] The Xubuntu documentation still advertises the 9.10 version.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu/LucidLynx/Final [/INS]
