Question Attaching a monitor

I am trying to get my monitor to work with the vga port on my laptop. I am using a Dell Inspiron 700m but the function keys to switch lcd/crt do not work in SuSE 9.2 so I am in the proces of switching to fedora 3. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What kind of graphics card is in the Dell? Try plugging in the CRT monitor and rebooting the computer. I have an IBM Thinkpad...I use this nifty little program to have the display on both the lappy LCD and CRT.
