That is ancient and clunky - 150nm manufacturing. But of course you knew that.

You're stuck with the OSS radeon offering. Even they have forgotten about that. What have you installed as a driver? When you say Nothing, what do you see. Can you boot X?

Radeon card

Hi business_kid, thanks for replying.

Yes, it's an old lady. The laptop is about 10 years old, and worked with XP for years. It was my wife's machine.
On XP, the driver is named : ati2mtag.sys
the video card is : Advanced Micro Devices, Inc [AMD/ATI] RV200/M7 (Mobility Radeon 7500)

When I try a live DVD of "Mint", the screen is black (nearly black, so I know it's on).
Every issue of "Mint" I tried got same result.
I did'nt try to typ" "start X" in blind mode. Perhaps I should try this.

With Debian, it works but fail to get some driver, so Gnome 3 can't work.
Anyway, Debian works with a scrolling menu like Ubuntu.
I am pretty surprised about those problems, as my old laptops from Dell work fine with nearly every distribution. (Inspiron 4000 14" with 700MHz P3, then Latitude D610 14" with 2GHz Centrino).

Please forgive my poor english. Hope to hear from from you soon.
Jean (John)

Well, the important milestones are
1. You need the kernel module and kms going. You need a recent version of a distro and you should be ok.

Now, when you switch off, and switch on, do you see stuff? how long do you see stuff for? If it works up to some way through the boot sequence, boot with the no kms option on the kernel boot line. This from a very poor memory of it, is
radeon=nokms

This box runs an R300=rs600=X1250=RS690M, a couple of generations after yours.
