ASUS x50c no sound

I have following problem with sound on my laptop ASUS X50C. Soundcard is detected, kernel module loaded, everything plays just fine. But there is no sound.

I've googled for similar problems and suggested solution is to add ”options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo“ to /etc/modprobe.d/sound and reboot. I did it but without success. Nothing changed. Sound pretends to play but all I get is silence. Also tried different models but without success too.

Under windows sound works just fine.

I'm using Debian Lenny
Code:
$ uname -a
Linux sepulcarium2 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Mon Dec 15 18:15:07 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
lspci output

I had the same problem and I fixed it by installing alsa 1.0.18 and used alsaconf, then alsamixer.
First check your alsa version:

alsactl -v

If it is old, reinstall it from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Download

Then stop your alsa: /etc/init.d/alsasound stop
Next: alsaconf
Finally: alsamixer
to unmute the sound(by pressing "M") and configure the volume(by pressing up and down arrows).

I hope that will help you.

WILDalmighty Thank you

First I installed alsa-1.0.18 from debian experimental (way too lazy to build it myself). No effect.

Than I installed alsa-source (from experimental too) and build it using module-assistant. I suppose it's almost the same as you method but more human friendly (althrough debian specific). After that sound appeared. Not sure whether 1.0.18 is required.

Button which control sound does not work but who cares.
