Asus G2K-A1; Gutsy Gibbon ONLY in `command line' mode. How 2 get a nice KDE desktop ?
Installed Kubuntu 7.10 Alternate AMD64, picked the kernel 2.6.22-14 selection. Attempts at using each install method `Install to hard drive' or `OEM method' would not complete booting, just a dark screen after kernel image loading.
After numerous attempts to recover / rescue system I tried `Install a command-line system' which works OK. But my limited GNU knowledge prevents me from getting a desktop mode operating. I set resolution to 1920 x 1400, next time I tried 1680 x 1200, still just a blank screen (???) An attempt to boot from a LIVE CD also hangs cat /var/lib/acpi-support system-product-version, system-version, bios-version & thengrep: etc/default/default/locale all are `No such file or directory'. The last line of Starting K Display Manager: kdm shows Running local boot scripts: (etc/rc.locale) is last entry [OK] 19apr edit. G2K has ATI Mobility Radeon 2600 HD, a fairly new card on the market, but most Linux apps work fine when set @ 19..x1440. Fedora 8 x64, Gparted, PartImage all work fine, wondering if Kub forgot the latest graphics drivers for laptops! |
Which model of graphics card do you have? It may be that you need a better driver.

Get the lastest ATI drivers from www.ati.com. It'll work.
