Asus 1005HA mic issue with eeebuntu 3.0.1NBR

I have recently purchased an Asus 1005HA netbook.
It had Windows XP installed. However I wiped that and
installed eeebuntu 3.0.1 NBR and a Linux backport to
enable WiFi. Everything works fine out of the box with
the exception of the microphone.
The built in mic does not work in Skype or Sound recording.
The best I have been able to get is a hissing sound.
I have Googled this problem and found that lots of folks
seem to be having the same problem. Tried lots of solutions
that were suggested, some of which were contradictory,
but none of them worked for me. And help would be
greatly appreciated. The Asus 1005HA is a popular netbook
and Linux is better than XP. Someone must have solved it.
TIA

You may need to enable all devices in the BIOS setup...

Checked that. Could find no reference to mic in BIOS.

No, but the mic is part of the USB subsystem, including the webcam, and as such, all USB devices must be enabled in order for it to work.

Thank you. I will take a closer look and report back.

OK. Went back into the BIOS, There is an item called
"Onboard Devices Configuration" which includes an
"Audio" and Bluetooth" setting. All are enabled.
So I still have no working mic and need help.

Did you see any reference to USB in the onboard devices config? It is there. I have the same netbook, running the same distro, with all updates applied, and the mic works.

Yes; on the right side of the BIOS window.
However it is not selectable.
I even tried disabling a couple of items
and then enabling them again to no effect.
I am beginning to suspect the mic is broken.
May have to take it to Asus as it is still under warranty.
Thank you very much for trying to help.
You may find it interesting that both my parents were born in Ireland.

No probs, and say hello to your folks for me! What part of Ireland are they from? I hope that you can sort out your problem through your warranty, my advice for what it's worth is to re-install XP on it before returning it to ASUS.
On a point of interest, the ethernet connection on my netbook refused to work until I enabled it in XP, it then worked in eeebuntu.

Thanks much. Unfortunately both my parents passed away many years ago.
Mother from Galway and father from Cork. Met here in US.
Not so young myself any more. YOu were right about Asus. They told
me "We only support Microsoft Windows." So I fixed it myself in a
way. I have a webcam with a built in microphone on my desktop PC
(running Linux Mint) and plugged it into a USB port on the Asus.
After playing around with the settings it worked fine. So I went to
the local Radio Shack store and picked up a microphone with a
USB connector. A little inconvenient to lug around but now I have
Skype and whatever else I need a mic for. This fix may work for
others also.
Thanks again for trying to help.

Iv'e got an Asus 1005HAP running Ubuntu 9.04. I actually _don't_ think the mic is part of the usb system, but I could be wrong. I know it works on my machine though, so...

Two things:

Sometimes the mic is busted and doesn't even work in windows! Check it in windows, and get an exchange from your reseller or Asus if it's busted. I read several reviews of the 1005 (and other eee models) that mention DOA microphones, so I made sure to test mine before wiping out windows.

Eeebuntu doesn't completely track standard Ubuntu, so that could be your issue. Try full fledged Ubuntu, install the backports for the wireless driver, and see how that works. I've used it for months now, and it's fine: CPU scaling works, as does the webcam, microphone, sound, and all the function keys (brightness, mute, volume up/down, sleep, etc). It goes to sleep when you close the lid, and wakes up fine when you open it. In a nutshell :) for this model, eeebuntu is completely unnecessary.

Good luck. Lemmie know if I can pull some setting/config option off of mine if you need an example.

I installed eeebuntu from a USB stick before I had a chance to check
the mic. However I am pretty sure it was DOA as you noted as the
install was shortly after the machine was delivered. And now Asus
refuses to even test it as they only support Windows. So I'll just
stick with the USB mic. Thanks however.

Well, hope that works out for you, I personally would want to hand it back to ASUS if it were not working! Anyhow, take care...
