All sorts of problems!

Hi guys

Been trying to get ubuntu set up and properly running on my netbook, and it just ain't working... Running 8.04 remix

I can't seem to connect to my wireless internet (wired works fine). It won't automatically detect any settings, so I've tried to do it manually.
Where do I find things like DNS, gateway, subnet mask, and the rest?
I figure if I can input all that, internet may work.

Also, I have no sound... It was fine before I updated, so either one of the 148 ubuntu updates or one of the Gstreamer codecs is to blame.
I had to install the gstreamer codecs, as rhythmbox wouldn't add any of my music without (MP3's, all of them).

And lastly, I cannot upgrade to 8.10! Having seen tutorials of how to do it by gui and terminal, none of them work. I don't have an option for update manager under System/Admin, and running it via terminal just doesn't seem to do anything.

Wow, wall of text. Sory bout that! Hope someone can help, these little things are driving me crazy!

Use Slackware because it "just works".

Slackware won't help, I've got no CD drive! Otherwise I'd install Ubuntu 8.10 and go from there.

So, which of the 40 or so netbooks on the market do you have? Saying "I have a netbook" is useless because there is a wide variety of models on the market with a wide variety of hardware.

Ah crap, how'd I forget to put that in! Sorry bout that...

Toshiba NB100-11r.
80gb hdd
512mg ram
Intel Atom N270 processor (1.6ghz)
Ubuntu Remix (8.04) OS

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.c...eries/1058021/ Link to the toshiba site. Mine is the first on the left.

So far I've just tried Ubuntu, but I'm trying to get hold of an external CD drive so I can try an 8.10 install, and maybe other distro's if it really doesn't work.
I assume it can boot of usb, but I haven't tried yet. Need a bigger usb stick first!

Loked in the BIOS, Yes it can boot from USB. How big would I need? I'm guessing I could do it with a 4gb one.
My USB at the minute is a pitiful 64mb!

Cheers Repo, I'll try that as soon as possible!
Does anyone know if there's a conversion script for Jaunty yet, so I can put 9.04 on instead of 8.10?

I've also noticed I don't have as many menu items as is normal, but I'd assume that's because of the remix version I'm running.

Right, first off, a big thanks to everyone who's helped so far, I've actually had intelligent input here compared to getting absolutely nothing on a couple of other forums.

I managed to get Ubuntu 9.04 installed onto a USB and from that fully installed onto my Toshiba. I installed over the old Hardy remix, so now I run solely Jaunty.
That has fixed the audio problem, which is fantastic.

But... I still have no internet
I can detect the networks, but when I try and connect and put in the WEP key, it doesn't seem to work. I put in the wep key, it tries to connect, and after a minute, I get the same box where I put the wep key again. No connection, and it asks for the key again.

Any ideas?

First try to disable wep, and see if you can connect.

The issue with the wireless could be either simple user error, i.e. typo or an incorrect setting, or you might have to update your drivers for your wireless card. You could temporarily remove security to your wireless router until you are complete, just to test things out. Keep in mind that many routers can be set up with MAC filtering, this might simplify things.
