alienware laptop with built in web cam in Ubuntu


Hello I am fairly new to Linux and even newer to Ubuntu i bought an alienware mj-12 laptop and since i bought it used with no OS im not sure what the webcam manufacture or model is and was just interested in seeing if i can get it working so where would i go or what command would i use in the terminal to find it?

Try using "lsusb" and/or "lspci". Chances are, lsusb will bring it up, and show you something.

is the output under lsusb

Ok...try the SN9Cxxxx module (check your system; "find / -name sn9c*" for the module name). From what I read, that may support the Q-Tec 300 webcam. This page http://www.linux-projects.org/module...wcat.php?cid=5 (specifically, the videoview application), seems to work with that cam, or at least can detect it.

Your mileage may vary, though. I've also seen that listed as an unsupported device, although the q-tec 120 is supported. Good luck.
