Agere Modem on ASUS M3700N and Slackware 9.0 krnl 2.6.6.

Hello, help me to figure out this little-big problem with Agere Systems AC'97 modem.
I've got ASUSM3700N Laptop and have installed Slackware 9.0. Updated to Kernel 2.6.6.
All works fine but not modem.

It is detected as this:
Jun 9 13:27:03 darkstar kernel: ALSA device list:
Jun 9 13:27:03 darkstar kernel: #0: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem at 0xe200, irq 11

I've install slmodemd v. 2.9.7 but ./configure SUPPORT_ALSA=1 did not work for me so I had to do it without this. Anyway from slmodem README I see that it should still work. So I did the installation without the ALSA support.

Now when I do modprobe slamr I get:
Jun 9 13:31:11 darkstar /sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/sound.agent is installed
Jun 9 13:31:11 darkstar /sbin/hotplug: no runnable /etc/hotplug/sound.agent is installed
Jun 9 13:31:11 darkstar kernel: slamr: probe 8086:24c6 ICH4 card...
Jun 9 13:31:11 darkstar kernel: slamr: slamr0 is ICH4 card.

/usr/sbin/slmodemd --country=RUSSIA and the modem works:

SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.7 Jun 1 2004 20:10:29
modem `slamr0' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/2'
symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/2' created.
Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.

Here is my wvdial.conf:

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttySL0
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Stupid Mode = yes
Carrier Check = no [tried yes, but the same problem]
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = p8w27545322
Username = free
Password = free

but this is what I get:
root@darkstar:/# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDTp8w27545322
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDTp8w27545322
NO CARRIER
--> No Carrier! Trying again.
--> Sending: ATDTp8w27545322
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDTp8w27545322
BUSY
and this never ends...

Now what I think. The first problem is that I cannot manage the SUPPORT_ALSA=1 thing so it could be due to this. I do not understand from the README of slmodemd what flags should I edit for this to work.
Second is that what is actually going on. The modem is detected it responds to ATI commands it dials out but does not hear the ISP modem sound (CARRIER) and then does not drop the line after the NO CARRIER is detected.

I've searched google as far as I could and read the manuals and I tried to use the hints from topics of this forum. Tried to be solving this problem for a long time now. And now I think I need help ;-)

No, I had no success with the modem.

To compile with ALSA support, go into the slmodem-<version>/modem directory and:
make clean
make SUPPORT_ALSA=1

then run:
./slmodemd --alsa --country=<your_country> #1 (or #0, #2... keep trying)

My chipset was not supported by ALSA mode, maybe yours is not too.

I decided to buy a external modem, a Trendnet TFM-560X. I had good recomendations.
I'm looking for good prices yet, hardware is pretty expensive here in Brazil.
If you want my opinions about the modem when I buy it, let me know.

still nothing

well I am over. won't do a thing about this modem any more. I've got slackware 9.1 Installed slmodemd with ALSA support now, the problem was that I should have installed alsa-lib before. And I even connected with kppp once but then pppd broke and it never worked again. I mean I get the same NO CARRIER. So I am sick of this. I even wrote to the slmodemd developper and their help did not help me. I guess I will try debian and see if it will work out. How are you doing with your new external modem?

I have bought the TFM-560X. It arrived this week and seems to be absolutely perfect. Apparently, it's pretty fast, stable and beautiful
It was a bit expensive, but it's worth of each cent.
Worked out of the box, no drivers shit or anything else.

I'd recommend it for anyone.
