Advise not installing Gentoo or any related distro on Toshiba Laptops!
 

I used their acclaimed "LiveDVD 10 Years" boot disk and I wasn't impressed at all. First off all, I was mislead by them saying that it had GNOME 3.0 interface but it doesn't. And I don't care for KDE. And being a newbie, not liking KDE I overlooked one step and my GRUB shutdown on me completely. I scramble for another distro CD somewhere and I found Kubuntu, which is either one of the most slowest installers ever or as I assumed, I needed to get another distro. So I am going to run KNOPPIX tonight to recover. Also, I tested the Toorox distro also Gentoo based and it failed me too. And that distro is lacking on support forums and any install help. At first, I don't see what this has to do with Toshiba laptops.
At second, the live-DVD comes with , so may it be that you simply forgot to change the DE you want to use in the login screen?
How did you manage to damage your Grub installation? The live-DVD doesn't contain an installer.

The point is: Gentoo is not a hold your hands distro. If you want to run Gentoo you have to learn the Gentoo way. If you don't want that use a different distro, there are many for many different types of users. And since you state yourself that you are a newbie I don't think you should advise other people what not to use, just because you can't handle it.

i apoligize if my comments from previous post was discouraging, but some distro's are meant to be personalized or optimized, by the user & requires a greater knowledge of linux than I posses my statements were not to discourage you, but to inform you to find a distro that fits your knowledge of linux, if you are on a level of installing gentoo, the have fun with it. I myself have a gentoo installation which is incomplete & plan on continuing it when, I have the knowledge of getting it to a useable point, but gentoo is not my first installation, it is 1 of many. To me gentoo & LFS are 2 of the most difficult to install, but if you master them both, you will most likely have the knowledge of making a really secure linux installation no matter which os you chose.

Gnome 3 didnt work? That would make sense if your video hardware is not supported, or if you havent installed the right drivers.

Why if you dont like KDE 4.X did you try to install kubuntu? Its ubuntu but with the KDE desktop....

Yes, I checked out the forums for Toorox. The specific problem was the I never even got to any desktop interface. The Grub loader kept looking for USB devices indefinitely...

So when I went to the Toorox forums and found their reply to someone else's post on this same thing, not only was it broken English to make matters worse to understand but they did not answer it at all, yet it was marked answered and closed.

Concerning KDE, no, I myself prefer Gnome. I do not like Kubuntu though as I tried it and just the live CD was bad enough waiting and waiting....for it to start installing. I don't believe I'm much of a Debian fellow it doesn't appear. I like the Gentoo based distros but I am now on Mandriva 2011 and it's working pretty good. I am though working on figuring out how to switch over to GNOME from KDE on it though.

I have heard some negative things about GNOME 3? I cannot remember specifics but it was in some review I read of a Distro. Maybe it's too buggy? You know of any complaints on GNOME 3?
