adding to kernel line

I am trying to add a command to the kernel line at the grub menu.

The options I have at the menu are...

recordfail
insmod ext2
setroot='(hd0,1)
search __no_floppy __fs_uuid __set (lots of numbers etc)
cae
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root (lots of numbers) quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic

is any of this anything to do with the kernel line if so why does it not start with kernel? If not any suggestions?

please help
