Unhappy Add remove applications on Dell 300m and various problems...

I have a Dell Inspiron 300m w/ 384MB Ram and a Sigmatel Sound Card. Two main problems I have: 1. Whenever I try to install packages from my Fedora disks through the Add/Remove Application GUI, I get "Error installing packages", "There was an error installing packages." "Exiting" in a dialog box. Helpful, right? Not sure how to access/create a log while attempting to install. BUT, if I try to load through BASH, no problem...

Problem # 2, it detects my sound card as an 82801 DB AC'97 Audio Controller by Intel, but it's really a Sigmatel card... System sounds play faintly (not at full volume capability), but I can't hear CD's and the headphone jack doesn't work.

I am somewhat a neophyte, so I need directions spelled out pretty well... Help!!

Thanks in advance,
ke

Not sure about package problem, but I might be able to help you with your second problem. Have you tried starting alsamixer and making sure that the pcm/cd volumes are at sufficient levels? I know after installing both SuSE and Slack I had to go in and adjust these volumes (they were at a very low level) and then save the settings. That seemed to solve my problem with sound.

You should be able to invoke "alsamixer" from the CLI (and you may have to do it as root). You may also be able to invoke it from your GUI (you didn't say which GUI you were using). I know it can be found in the KDE menus, under Mutlimedia | KMix.

kde audio

Although alsamixer doesn't seem to be an option, I played with aumix (w/ friend's help) in KDE until I got sound, which works well. BUT...still no sound from CD-ROM nor headphone... Is this b/c I use a USB 2.0 CDROM? And is there a work around?

I found this using google...

not sure about USB CDROMS though. Is the headphone jack on the laptop itself or on the CDROM device?
