Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I recently bought IBM Thinpad T40, and put Slackware 9.1 on it. I also compiled 2.6.0 kernel. Now I think more or less the acpi should be working but the directory /proc/acpi has nothing useful inside. There is no battery status or fan status. Was anyone successful in getting the acpi to work on a similar setup to mine? What effect does the acpi has on the battery, is the battery's life shortened without acpi?
First question: Make sure you activated all the stuff under ACPI: battery, fan, thermal and so on...if you compiled it as a module, you have to insert them using modprobe.
Second question: ACPI is not really responsable for saving energy (although you can enter some sleep modes with acpi. See kernel documentation->look for /proc/acpi/sleep). This is done using a userspace daemon like cpufreq or autodyn (or similar...;-))
Yeah, I compiled all the stuff I was missing as modules ;-) So the acpi works, sleep also works, but how can I get that little light to light up when the laptop is in sleep mode?
