acpi can't run my script

I managed to get the backlight to turn on/off when opending/closing the lid, but somehow it doesn't work anymore. I get the following error in /var/log/acpid:

xset: unable to open display ""
open /dev/zero: Permission denied
Radeon hardware not found in lspci output.

depending on the method used to turn on/off the light (see script).

I think it stopped working after I tried to install gnome-power-manager,

# /etc/acpi/
# Turn on/off LCD backlight when lid is opened/closed

grep -q open $LID_STATE

if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
        #/usr/sbin/vbetool dpms on
        xset dpms force on
    #/usr/sbin/radeontool light on
        xset dpms force off
        #/usr/sbin/vbetool dpms off
    #/usr/sbin/radeontool light off
