ACPI and shutdown problem on old compaq

This is a fresh debian install on an old compaq armada 1750. I need acpi=off as boot option or the fan just runs and runs. But with acpi=off, the laptop doesn't turn off properly. It goes through the shut down sequence okay, and then after "halting system" it just hangs there and I have to pull out the battery and power cord to shut it off. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get around that?

spoke too soon. the fan runs constantly with acpi=force, as well. there has to be some way either to not run acpi (acpi=off, noacpi, etc.) and allow it to shut down, or else have acpi enabled but not keep the fan going all the time. is there an acpi setting somewhere for what temperature triggers the fan that I could adjust?

With ACPI turned off, try using the 'apm=power-off' kernel parameter.

Or enter
Code:
apm power_off=1
in /etc/modules. That worked on my IBM T20.
