ACPI' Mandrake 9.1 Problem on Presario 2120 laptop???

Hello,

I successfully installed Linux mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, but i have a little problem, the problem is, when i try to shutdown my laptop on Linux, it starts the shutdown of my Laptop but stop at "power down" and i have to push down it manually (by clicking on "off" on my laptop).

Then, i notice that i have no "Energy Management", "battery state"... , because when i click on battery state, it says that the APM software hasn't been installed or the linux kernel hasn't got the APM drivers ...

Could you help me please about the problem because i don't know what i have to do ???

( i am a beginner )

Thanks in advance !!

Go to Mandrake Control Center(mcc) at the command prompt and bring up the software installer. Search for APM, and install.

If your presario 2120 is like my presario 2110 (ie: relatively recent laptop) then its ACPI and not APM ready. Which means that you need to compile and use kernel 2.6 to get all those apps working (ie: the battery monitor and such)

that's what I had to do...I installed Mandrake 9.2 (although you can use 9.1) and upgraded to kernel 2.6 (use URPMI its easier that way)

Many thanks

Excuse me, but i always don't know what i should do ???

Do you have a "Howto" about this problem ??
what is the better and the more simple solution in order to remedy at this problem ???

Thanks in advance !!

sorry :)

I don't have a how-to per say...but since you are using Mandrake, my suggestion is to learn how to use URPMI, that's an awesome tool.

I prefer to use it on the command line (as root in a terminal window).

Usually its as simple as typing:

urpmi (package name here)

and then if you haven't set it up since the install, it'll ask you whichever installation CD you need to put in and install it for you (along with any dependencies).

Now, I would suggest two things since you are a beginner:

1) Search this forum, there are LOTS of threads on how to use urpmi, TONS of them and TONS of good information right here at your finger tips. (For that matter, there's tons of info on anything else)
2) Google is your friend, there's tons of info there...sometimes, 10-15 mins reading will beat waiting a day or two for a post. AND you get the pride of knowing you're improving your skills instead of being spoonfed. It took 5 seconds for me to type in "urpmi howto" in google and get back links to a dozen howtos.

Once you learn URPMI, you can use it to upgrade your kernel easily to 2.6 (and the stock kernel has ACPI built right in)...you can't get ANY simpler than that...really.

Thanks

Many Thanks for your advice !!!

Good Day !!!

You need to recompile the kernel with ACPI built in. Disable the APM options, as well as the multi processor support, and enable the ACPI options. There is a good guide posted in the general forum on compiling a kernel.

That's true. But in the case of Mandrake 9.1 (and 9.2) the stock 2.6 kernels have ACPI compiled in already...so recompiling isn't strictly necessary (although always a good idea)

beginner 03-09-2004 08:22 AM

So ???

If i install Mandrake 9.2, i shouldn't have any ACPI's problem(s) ???
Because i don't know what i have to do, i'm really a newbie on Linux, and i don't know how to compile kernel ??????

Moreover, is it possible to install Mandrake 9.2 with kernel 2.6 directly ???if it is the case could you tell me How ???

Thanks in advance !!

I don't think 9.2 comes with the 2.6 kernel package. You have to upgrade to it same as with 9.1.

So wiping your 9.1 and installing 9.2 would give you VERY little advantage right now.

As I said before, learn to use URPMI, and get yourself a 2.6 kernel in the system you have now.

I have a 2.6.1 kernel right now, and I had to compile in the ACPI support. It came compiled as a ACPI=HT, which is CPU enumeration if I remember right, but that doesnt work on my machine, and not all the options for fan, battery, and lid were built in as well.

Beginner- Depending on when you got your version of the 9.2, I would wait until the 10.0 becomes public. I upgraded to the 9.2, found that it was a little buggy, and rolled back to the 9.1, which is my favorite anyway. My advice is stick with the 9.1 for now. It will run a 2.6 kernel, although as with anything else, it takes a little work and time to get it right. Fact is, ACPI is still not fully supported on some machines, so its something to tinker with right now. If you have one of the blacklisted BIOS that are on the sourceforge website, I think your out of luck. Its an ongoing project.

re compile?

Hi All,
I have the same problem on a presario 2100.

I just installed Mandrake 10 (fresh INstall) and have no APM/ACPI functionality at all. I used rpmDrake to install those packages, but I get the following when i try to run the deamons. Can anyone help?

NOTE: Due to many reasons, re compiling the kernel is NOT an option

Code:

[samer@localhost samer]$ apm
No APM support in kernel
[samer@localhost samer]$ acpi
No ACPI support in kernel, or incorrect acpi_path ("/proc/acpi").
[samer@localhost samer]$

Important Update: I read and applied the trick to enable ACPI in lilo. That has rendered my System unbootable So far Mandrake 9.2 and 10 have bene HUGE disappointments. I might have to go back to SuSE. This is the ast straw. if I cna't get the APm/ACPI to boot/work I will ditch Mandrake forever.

Anyone wanna save thisa fellow to become a mandrake fan?

You dont have ACPI support in the kernel. Unfortunately, the only way to get it there is a recompile.

Your notebook is too new to support APM. Pretty much all laptops these days support ACPI. You might try upgrading to the Mandrake 10, since I think it comes enabled with the 2.6.x kernel that comes with that.

Kramer If your reply was meant for me, please read above. I said I installed Mandrake 10 ;)

Kramer 03-16-2004 08:06 AM

The reason your system wont boot now is because the ACPI isnt enabled, but its in the boot parameters, and also, APIC (symmetric multiprocessor support) is enabled by default in the kernel, which conflicts with ACPI and causes the lockup your talking about. There is a bug report on the Mandrake Cooker site about this.
