Acer TravelMate plus 24" screen: no 1920x1200 resolution?

Hello everyone!

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Travelmate laptop, and I want to use my 24" Eizo screen with it. The native resolution of the screen is 1920x1200 pixels, but I get the resolution 1770x1000 as my maximum. I have the ATI radeon HD2400XT graphics card, and the drivers provided by ATI. Does anybody know how to get 1920x1200 resolution?

Thanks for any answers

You might need to create a custom xorg.conf file with the appropriate Modeline.

I have been searching google for a solution on this problem for a while, and I saw a co8ple of websites who recommended the same thing: edit xorg.conf. I did however not find instructions on how to do it. I have no idea what the appropriate Modeline is, sorry

Just because I wrote this, it seems, I found how to edit the xorg.conf file: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=129379 I still haven't tried the fix on my laptop though.

If I understand you...

You are using the ATI open source or Catalyst/fglrx driver. In that case you may use "xrandr" to configure your screen. Note how to make your changes permanent.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution

http://www.manpagez.com/man/1/xrandr/

There is already a thread here at LQ that might help you.

I tried using the xrandr console interface, and got something working somehow. I found out that by typing
Code:
xrandr --output LVDS -off
I got the output:
Code:
usage: xrandr [options]
  where options are:
  -display <display> or -d <display>
  -help
  -o <normal,inverted,left,right,0,1,2,3>
            or --orientation <normal,inverted,left,right,0,1,2,3>
  -q or --query
  -s <size>/<width>x<height> or --size <size>/<width>x<height>
  -r <rate> or --rate <rate> or --refresh <rate>
  -v or --version
  -x (reflect in x)
  -y (reflect in y)
  --screen <screen>
  --verbose
  --dryrun
  --prop or --properties
  --fb <width>x<height>
  --fbmm <width>x<height>
  --dpi <dpi>/<output>
  --output <output>
      --auto
      --mode <mode>
      --preferred
      --pos <x>x<y>
      --rate <rate> or --refresh <rate>
      --reflect normal,x,y,xy
      --rotate normal,inverted,left,right
      --left-of <output>
      --right-of <output>
      --above <output>
      --below <output>
      --same-as <output>
      --set <property> <value>
      --off
      --crtc <crtc>
  --newmode <name> <clock MHz>
            <hdisp> <hsync-start> <hsync-end> <htotal>
            <vdisp> <vsync-start> <vsync-end> <vtotal>
            [+HSync] [-HSync] [+VSync] [-VSync]
  --rmmode <name>
  --addmode <output> <name>
  --delmode <output> <name>
This gave me an idea, and by typing
Code:
xrandr
I got the following output:
Code:
PANEL connected 1280x800+0+0 338mm x 211mm
   1280x800 60.0*+
TV_7PIN_DIN disconnected
VGA_1 disconnected
DVI-D_1 connected 1280x800+0+0 519mm x 324mm
   1920x1200 60.0 +
   1600x1200 60.0 59.9
   1680x1050 60.0 59.9
   1600x1024 60.0
   1400x1050 60.0
   1280x1024 59.9 60.0
   1440x900 60.2
   1280x960 60.0 59.9
   1280x800 60.0*
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 60.0 59.9
Then I entered the following commands, and my laptop screen turned off and my external monitor displays the right resolution
Code:
xrandr --output PANEL --off
xrandr -s 1920x1200
Thanks for the help, everyone! If anyone knows a simple way to automate the process every time I plug in the external monitor, I'll be happy to hear about it!
