Try to get detailed hardware on the notebook from manufactor. Their spec list is very vague. Study their driver list for Windows. It might give hardware and version info. Download the Windows drivers and view their readme's.

I tried to install Mandrake 9.2 on Travelmate 250
(254LC_DT) and got a problem: the screen becomes
blank/black and I can't see anything else, this
happens after the first screen menu of the
install procedure, when I hit return for std
installations. I tried changing somethings, but
it happened again...

Try using knoppix or some other trial distro. If it works, then you know you can at least go the route of installing that to the HD, if all else fails.
