ACER Travelmate 230
I have an Acer Travelmate 230 and have got all the hardware on it working with Mandrake 9.1 except the modem.
For anyone having trouble installing on one of these the trick is to edit /etc/lilo.conf adding the entries:
apm=off acpi=on
and running lilo from the command line afterwards otherwise APM tries starting at boot time and screws everything up.
The modem is an intel i845 on board and I'm trying the latest driver from:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/
with no luck. The i/o port is correct i.e. 0x24c6 but nothing on the laptop and I mean not sound, video, anything come up with an irq of less than 15 and the driver expects the modem to be on IRQ 11. The modem itself claims to be on irq 17.
Any idea what the hell's happening?

That is strange...i also have a Travelmate 230 and the pctel drivers do not work. I configured them with ./configure --with-hal=i8xx. The pctel module inserts without a problem, but when i insmod the ptserial.o i get:
PCTel: No deice detected. Abort module loading.
ptserial.o: init_module: Input/output error
The lspci shows that i have a Intel Corp.:Unknown device 24c6 (rev 02). To youre IRQ problem, my modem says IRQ11. I know this wont help you much, but you see that you arent the only one with that problem

Travelmate 230
Hi Stormwolf,
Weird that isn't it, I can only imagine that the bios on my machine is doing something weird to the interrupts. What are your BIOS settings re: PCI /pnp set to. It seems to give you the option of setting interrupts to a particular IRQ but I've tried all of them and it doesn't seem to make any difference.
What did your machine come up with when you did lspci -v and -n for the modem. If I can get the IRQ to 11 I will keep going til it works,
Cheers

hi again,
i have made the experience that linux does not really care about the bios at all. I have tried all kinds of options in the bios and linux with no really difference (as you said above). I have tried to change the IRQ, but it always gets on 11. The output is:

Hiya,
Weirdest thing, I installed Redhat 9 and all the IRQs were more "normal" than they are at the moment and the modem ended up on 11 which is a first. Modem didn't work but the interrupt was as expected.
Put Mandrake 9.1 back on and it all goes freaky again.
Gonna post a message on Mandrake Expert on this one and see if there's anything weird about the kernel. There are several other kernels on the CDs that I can try.
Cheers Stormwolf, knowing Debian got the IRQ right made trying Redhat seem worth the effort of the install.
See ya around

modem works on Acer Travelmate 230
My Acer TravelMate 230 has an Agere Systems AC'97 Modem, now running nicely under Red Hat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20-8) once I adjusted (see below)
compiled and make install(ed) driver slmdm-2.7.10 (not later versions!)
This driver taints the kernel but is useful for AMRs on Intel 82801DB
AC97 PCI which seem to be very common now. Purists will object e but I don't care - I want Mozilla, Ximian Evolution etc. on my
notebook now!
Shown to work on:
IBM ThinkPad R40 Centrino http://www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadR40.htm
Toshiba Tecra S1 http://www.vgcomputing.com.au/lrtecras1.html#Modem
Agere Soft Modem Ver 2.1.20
http://pctelcompdb.sourceforge.net/v....php?id_no=196
details for my TravelMate 230:
Manufacturer: Agere Systems AC'97 Modem (subsystem reported as Vendor
17c0 is the Wistron Corp, Inc., http://www.wistron.com.tw)
Model: Intel 82801DB AC97
Chipset: AMR
Status: Working
Distributions tested: RH 9.0
Kernel versions: 2.4.20-8
Driver versions: slmdm-2.7.10
Output of lspci -v:
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Modem (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
Subsystem: Unknown device 17c0:1069
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
I/O ports at 2400 [size=256]
I/O ports at 2000 [size=128]
Output of lspci -n:
00:1f.6 Class 0703: 8086:24c6 (rev 02)
Owner: John Eyres
Notes: Download the driver. Unpack the driver and then go into the
directory created. Edit the 75th line of the file amrmo_init.c
from: #define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ICH3 0x2486
to: #define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ICH3 0x24C6
follow the instruction in the readme for compiling and installing
software. Driver slmdm-2.7.14 DOSN'T work for some reason.

I have a travelmate 230 and I'm installing redhat 8.0
In the beginning it was hanging on pcmcia on boot - I eventually had to stop pcmcia from loading at boot using the rescue disk, and then sorted out the screen resolution problems.
However, I have no power monitor (apmd crashes) and I still cannot get pcmcia to work... to be honest I haven't missed pcmcia (dunno what it's for), but apmd would be VERY nice!!!!
Any ideas on how I can get this to work? Would perhaps an upgrade to Redhat 9 do the trick?
I would really appreciate your help,
Cheers,
Encarni

can you detail your problems with APM ?
Can you post the results of:
dmesg | grep apm
cat /proc/apm
P.D.: pcmcia are the slot-in "like credit cards" devices which you plug into the side of your laptop.

I am using RedHat 9. PCMCIA seems to have no problem.
But on the other hand, for some unknown reason I cannot use ACPI and USB-EHCI at the same time.
If I enable ACPI, then I'd get an error message when modprobing USB-EHCI (which means, I cannot use, for example, my USB mouse)
If I disable ACPI I can see all my USB devices again.
Weird, isn't it?
I have written a few scripts for acpid events, so that if the battery slow, a 'shutdown -h 2' is executed, but of course this won't work if I boot with ACPI disabled.
And APM doesn't seem to be supported by this laptop. Maybe kernel 2.6.0 solves many of this issues, I haven't had the chance to try it yet.
Regards,
Manuel Moran

hey again,
thanks to johney my modem finally works! But i still have problems with the yenta_socket and IRQ routing. I have to disable everything running on IRQ 11 -- net and soundcard and usb, so that my computer does not freeze when i insmod yenta_socket. Then i can load it into the kernel, but it still says that it runs on IRQ 0. The i82365 works fine, but i have to use yenta because i want to get a acx100 wlan card working that only runs with yenta socket. Could somebody help me out?
btw to mmv above: when i compile usb-ehci into the kernel i cant even boot up. It just stops with something like "USB-EHCI has IRQ 11 but wants IRQ 15" ... It could be there is a problem with the hardcoded IRQ in the bios. Let us cross our fingers that i am wrong...

Hi everyone, didn't mormop get everything running using Mndrk 9.1?
(except the modem on IRQ 11)
I can't get pcmcia (unlike mmv above) or ACPI running on redhat 9.0, I don't have a card to use pcmcia so I'm not so worried about this, but I want a battery charge monitor
I suspect that ACPI won't work untill I get a better kernel like 2.4.22 in slackware 9.1 or Mandrake 9.2. Has anybody tried these? Any comments appreciated.
Matt says quote...
The PCMCIA slots in the laptop are supported by the 2.4 kernel's "yenta" driver. However when I plugged in the Linksys WCP11 Wireless card I had the whole laptop consistently froze so lid. Finally found out what was wrong. After repeated reboots and config tests you have to exclude IRQ 3 and 5, that stops the system from hanging. Also if you have to load the yenta-socket modules (if you're using modules) before the USB and Network drivers. Add "pre-install usb-ohci modprobe yenta_socket" to your /etc/modules.conf to make the socket driver load first. As long as the network driver is modular then it gets loaded after usb anyway (at least on RH9 it does). You can look at my config.opts here.

hi all,
i have TravelMate 250 and i was trying to install Mandrake 9.1, but the screen was blank after I choose the default installation method.
A friend told me that TravelMate 250 can't be installed with Mandrake default kernel (2.4) and after I choose the alt1 kernel (2.2), the installation went smoothly.
Next, the problem occured again after the system rebooted after finished installing. It appeared that the installed kernel is 2.4 and the boot progress stopped at:
BIOS data check successful
Ok, loading the kernel...
then the system hanged.
any solutions???

I've met the same question on Travelmate230. After change Redhat from 7.1 to 9.1, it's ok.
