I have an Acer Aspire One (AA1) netbook running Linpus-lite. Everything was working well with a wireless internet connection until yesterday. Skype is installed and working, the acer OneMail was setup and working correctly. My son (8) was happy watching videos on YouTube and then the next day the PC would not connect to the internet. As far as I am aware nothing has been changed - is this a software problem or a hardware problem?

When the PC boots a wireless connection is usually looked for - this no longer appears to happen. There is no message saying "wireless connection not found" it just doesn't look as though the wireless is kicking in.

Using the wifi on/off switch at the front right of the PC had been used successfully in the past to re-initialise/re-start the wireless connection if it dropped out. The on/off icon appears when this is done but there is no sign of the wireless starting.

In the configuration application, the Network Center is used to setup and configure the wireless. However, clicking on this icon does nothing - no application opens, the wireless remains dead.

So, what can I check to determine if this is a hardware or a software problem? If it's a software problem how can I fix it?

Ok, I just found the solution in the forum for this problem.

rm -rf ~/.gconf/system/networking

I did this, re-started the PC and the internet stuff started to initialise. Naturally I had to re-do the wifi stuff, password, etc. but at least it's all working now.

I had this problem too with my kid's Aspire One (Linux). It happened after I borrowed it to use at a PTA meeting, and the battery ran out on me. Thanks for the solution. It's all working now. Here are some detailed non-command line instruction for the same fix, for those of us who need it:

This is to find and delete the networking folder:

1. From the regular Aspire One options page, go to the Files panel
2. Click on the triangle to see more icons
3. Click on MyFiles, which opens a file manager window.
4. In the menu bar, select View->Hidden files, to show a tick in the box. (Sorry, I'm translating from a German display, so the option names may not be spot on.)You should be in the "My Disk:///" directory.
5. Find folder "gconf" and click on that
6. Find folder "system" and click on that
7. You should now see folder "networking" listed as one of the folders.
8. DELETE IT! (Right click on the networking folder, and select option delete.)

Okay, once you have recovered from the fear of deleting goodness-knows-what-file because you are just following some internet instructions, you have to re setup your wireless connection:

1. Shut down all those windows, and go back to the regular Aspire One options page.
2. Click "Settings" on the bottom right.
3. Click icon for "Netwrok Center". If this works, and a window pops up then it's going well.
4. Click on "New", and follow the on screen instructions to connect and re-setup your WLAN or LAN.

Oh, and do check that the little network switch near the bottom right of the keyboard is switched on. It should show an orange light.

Hi i am trying to repair an Aspire One for my in-laws.
I folowed your advice but nothing is happening.
Are there any other solutions to getting the network centre to work again?

Hey all having same problem and tried this fix but nothing. When I click on network manager it shows no active networks at all. It was working fine till 3 days ago. Seriously Linux is garbage and I won't buy another Linux machine after this. Any help is apprieciared thanks x

Thank God I decided to wipe Linpus with Ubuntu!

Linpus is an absolute pain: There's no software newer than 2008 for it in the repos - anything newer you have to build from source. It has Xfce with a crippled desktop whose background cannot be changed, and the DE cannot be changed without getting dependency errors in the package manager. You cannot access the package manager without typing 'sudo system-config-packages' in a terminal...

...The list goes on and on. Linpus, especially Lite, is the worst distro I have ever tried.
