Acer Aspire One netbook heating
 

I have a Acer Aspire One netbook (http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AOA150-14.../dp/B001EYV9TM )and installed Ubuntu 8.04..
I followed the docs in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne to customize it to the Ubuntu requirements.
The netbook becomes very hot during its operation compared to while using it on XP home. How can I avoid overheating and constant fan noise ?

I have the AAO 150 and 250 one running Fedora 10 and the other Fedora 11 and the fans work and are hardly noticeable. I have to pick them up and place them close to my ear before the sound is heard and can feel the heat from the exhaust.

The AAO 150 (F10) have had it for 9 months and the AA0 250 (250) for 2 weeks.

I have a AOA 150-Bb and Model No ZG5 and using Ubuntu 8.04. I want to find the cause of heating.

did you install the kernel module for the fan as directed ?

Try running gkrellm. Most Linux distros I've used include it, but don't necessarily put it on the menu; otherwise, you can find it in the Ubuntu repos. It has a function you can turn on to report CPU temperature, assuming your computer cooperates.

Also, try shutting down the computer and vacuuming out the vents.

I know it sounds simple, but dust can build up without being noticed, especially when the vents are beneath and behind the machine. I turned my old Inspiron over a couple of months ago and was horrified at the mess I'd allowed to gather.

I have a Acer Aspire One, which came with Linux Linpus Lite pre-installed and it seems to be working fine. Hope you managed to get the fan working. Best wishes!

i don't think that the aspire one has temperature sensors, so can't use gkrellm... anyway i'm thinking of shifting to a different distro now...maybe Ubuntu netbook remix

I have the same netbook (AOA 150-Bb ZG5) running on Ubuntu 9.04 for about one month. Today I tired to turn on netbook simply pressing the power button, but I could not be successful. Netbook is automatically powered off after about 30 seconds by some controller. First I thought that problem is originated from Ubuntu and tried to reinstall Ubuntu. After starting to install Ubuntu, netbook again powered down in 30 seconds (while loading initial files). Installing a new OS is not possible. The same problem still continues while viewing BIOS settings. Then I loaded setup default settings for BIOS rapidly in 30 seconds and rebooted netbook, but nothing happened. :(

I want to update BIOS, but I could not find related firmware for Acer Aspire AOA 150-Bb on the Acer's official website. If I try to update BIOS firmware, 30 seconds is enough for this operation?

I have an A110-Ab. On about the second boot up, just after I bought it, it did the same switch off thing as phys found. Shut it down and the next day took it with in the car to reinstall Linpus - and no switch off! Back home I realized I left on my iBurst wireless internet link to My Win PC when I had this problem. It seems there was some RFI from there. Also there were no auto-detected hotspot links on the Wifi file. I have since used it at the PC with the wireless link running and detected non-running hotspot links. Did not get it since. Seems it may have been looking for something and found some incompatibility. At the start the Wifi would start up with netbook. Now no more.

When I took my PC in for warranty repairs about two years I was lucky to talk to a tech. I could ask him about laptops. He mentioned a particular client for whom he had to repair an overheated laptop under warranty some four times. He got suspicious and found that the client would close the laptop (still running), dump it in his briefcase and roar off to the next appointment. The client paid. This still keeps me ultra aware of not letting my Acer stand on anything soft to block the vents. It is very easy to get carried away and forget everything else.

If you guys don't believe yet(have a video too of the burning)...my first netbook had blown to fumes just days after i bought it..literally just after using it for couple of hours..on a table in a A.C room..blue smoke from behind ... Acer was kind enough to furnish a quick replacement because i was in EU..

Looking at main-board of netbook, I noticed that CPU fan was not rotating. Somehow there was a problem with power connection of fan. Reconnecting power cable with power terminal on the main-board, problem solved.
