Acer Aspire One A0A110 Linpus recovery not available. What other distros popular?
 

Wasted hours trying to download a Linpus Linux recovery DVD iso for Aspire One AOA 110. Maybe I should install a different Linux distribution. Any recommendations? Will be my first Linux installation.

Hate Windoze, love my Macbook - loved the Acer Aspire One (before it died...)

I've tried Mint, Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Archos.

First threee give you a full operating system, ready to use right after installation, or if you want to change anything in the system or install anything then it's very easy via gui tools.

Archos on the other hand requires you, at least initially, to use console.

My best bet would be Ubuntu or Xubuntu. Xubuntu is a lighter version of Ubuntu with same functionality.

A place for you to start I think =) You've got everything in there.

Take installation from usb memory stick into consideration. This way you save money (not burning it on cd) and time (installing from USB stick is usually faster).

The systems is great with Ubuntu - very happy except...

I just can't get the Huawei 160G USB 3G dongle to work. No response when I plug it in - I think I read somewhere that I need to modify the way the USB port works... Sorry, can't find any help so suggestions would be very welcome!

As for the dongle, as far as I know it's a kernel thing. What's your kernel version?

Considering I have the same netbook, I actually replaced Linpus with Ubuntu anyway, thanks to the lack of packages on Linpus.

Besides, Linpus's package manager (the same as Fedora's) is also hard to reach. You have to literally open a terminal window and type "sudo system-config-packages" in order to access it (and it uses YUM instead of APT, a huge turnoff).

Also: You can change the desktop background on Ubuntu. Definitely not on Linpus.

Not to mention, Linpus uses a half-baked implementation of Xfce that is more crippleware than not. You can't customize the panel, cannot change the DE without dependency resolving errors, and can only install old versions of popular Ubuntu applications.

Ubuntu, GNOME Shell, and RGBA, not to mention, as of just a few minutes ago (these screenshots were taken yesterday), Google Chromium instead of Firefox. Yes, I also found Chromium in the repos.

Oh, and I am also using a prerelease of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx Daily Live).
