Acer 351TE install problems

I have used Knoppix on this laptop with no problems (yet) and so wanted to install Debian. It fails with the error hdc:lost interrupt and after a few tries goes to the select language screen then fails to find the cdROM. I tried Ubuntu and it fails almost immediately with the message 'initramfs'.

I had some old cd's with Fedora core 3 on and it loads ok. Can anyone help me to get round the problems with Debian or Ubuntu? I suspect that they are related and have found many posts on the web about them but no answers.

Thanks peter I managed to load Debian with acpi=off. The ubuntu system never gives me a boot prompt and so I couldn't try that. It goes to the opening screen and there you have no prompt just amenu to select from.
