AC'97 Audio Controller problem on zd8156EA

Hi to everyone, i'm very new to linux but I am so stuffed by Windoz that I decide to fully migrate to another OS.
For working reasons I chose Fedora Core 4 and the big challenge was to install it on a "new" HP zd8156EA...I've found some hints for wireless problems and display here:

humboldt.edu/~te8/misc/hpzd8230us.html

but no issues for the sound problem.
When I try to play a sound or test the soundcard, the tool hangs and some times hanged the xserver as well (dunno if correct, but nothing was worknig and had to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to init 1 and init 5 again).
my lspci is:

hi biophysics, are you sure that it would be the same for Debian and Fedora? Sorry but I'm not skilled enough to understand if this can cause a problem, what do you think?

ciao

If I say "yes, it will be the same for both distros" are you going to believe me?

I don't know much of linux in general, but I expect that different distros handle in different ways modules.
Anyway I will try that solution and see if it works or not...
Thanks

ale

BTW, what do you gain not telling me the truth? If you do know I expect an answer, if you do not know is just easy to say "I don't know"...

I have that same soundcard running in Slackware.

Try adding this line to /etc/hotplug/blacklist:
snd-intel8x0m

Run alsaconf.
Now reboot, and run alsamixer turning the volumes up. Be sure to toggle the mute off with the M key.
Sound should work fine now.

Do all this from console, and good luck.

Actually try just type alsaconf on console

If that doesn't work, try whereis alsaconf, and if it's not there you may need to get it.

I tried to uninstall the old package but it cannot be done because it's required on my system-config-soundcard.
What can I do?

Well considering you already have the package installed, no need to reinstall it

Just run alsaconf from console. Will that not work?

hey stryka!!! everything's fine!!! my soundcard works, actually I didn't run alsaconf because of all the problem I showed you, but it has been enough rebooting the system to have the sound working. Can you please now explain me what was happening? is that the module snd-intel8x0m did conflict with the snd-intel8x0?? what is really the blacklist you told me to edit?
Very glad for your help!
ciao
Ale
