a little issue with Fn hotkeys

First of all, i am quite new in linux. I have a little problem with my Fn volume hotkeys on my ASUS F3Jc notebook in slack 13. after installing the distribution I had sound, didn't need any drivers. but when I try to adjust the volume (Fn+F11 - down, Fn+F12 - up), the volume tab appears but stays at 0% in all cases. I looked alsamixer and here how it looks:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7735/soundj.png
As you can see, Master volume is 00 and can't be adjusted, so in my opinion thats why i see 0% with hotkeys always. I adjust volume right now by this second PCM. maybe anyone have an idea how to make "Master" to work?
I tryed alsaconf, everything seemed ok, i guess.

You probably need to put a line into /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=????

Some people have reported this working:
model=3stack-660

Some with Asus laptops used this & it worked:
model=lenovo

Use the "xdev" program to discover the codes that your computer uses for your multimedia keys.

Then create a ~/.Xmodmap file.
Here is an example:
Code:
!Use ! for comments
!keycode 172 = XF86AudioPlay
!keycode 174 = XF86AudioStop

keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
keycode 180 = XF86HomePage
keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
Your keycodes may be different. You need a desktop mixer applet running on your desktop AFAIK. E.G. kmix.

Look in /etc/X11/Xmodmap for a template for your ~/.Xmodmap and add lines like above to it.

ok, i launched "xev" and checked the key codes
Code:
keycode 121 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 122 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 123 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
but as you jschiwal said:
Quote:

i can't see Xmodmap in this folder. or I missunderstood something?

Actually, it is just an example where the lines are commented out:
Code:
cat /etc/X11/Xmodmap
!! ~/.Xmodmap
!!
!! Use this as a template for $HOME/.Xmodmap
!!
!! The leading `!' is the comment sign.
!!
!! Please note: the natural way to assign keys are their keycodes.
!! The only problem is, that keycodes do depend on the architecture,
!! therefore keysymbols are used herein. This has the disadvantage
!! that this file can only be called once with the program xmodmap.
!! To get keycodes of the keys use the program xev.
!! The system Xmodmap is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xmodmap, have a look.

!! First example: Swap control key with caps lock key just like on
!! lk401 from DEC or type 4 from Sun Microsystems
!remove Lock = Caps_Lock
!remove Control = Control_L
!keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
!keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
!add Lock = Caps_Lock
!add Control = Control_L

!! Second example: Make left Alt key to left Meta key
!! Note that afterwards no key is assigned anymore to the symbol Alt_L.
!clear Mod1
!keysym Alt_L = Meta_L
!add Mod1 = Meta_L

!! Third example: Change right Control key to Compose key.
!! To do Compose Character, press this key and afterwards two
!! characters (e.g. `a' and `^' to get ).
!remove Control = Control_R
!keysym Control_R = Multi_key
!add Control = Control_R

!! Fourth example: Make Menu key on WIN95 keyboard doing Compose
!keysym Menu = Multi_key

!!
!! End of ~/.Xmodmap
Don't feel bad. I don't have a /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xmodmap file.

well, I didn't get everything you were writing here, but I solved it by creating an user. All the time I was in root. and in new user master channel was selected as PCM, not master, which is 00 (i read that 00 is because of sound card or its drivers). I didn't know how to change master channel then. I do it by clicking on KMix right button and select "select master channel..."
