915resolution on Debian Etch

Im new at linux. I am trying to get my Intel 845G video chipset to display at 1024x768. I have a Dell Inspiron 1100. I installed sarge and it worked fine with both 855resolution and 915resolution. I installed etch (debian testing) from scratch and now 915resolution does not work. I changed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. At start up it shows 915resolution patch 1024x768 taking place but doesnt actually do anything. The patch shows up later during the boot than it did with sarge (which showed up at the beginning and later on as well). Is the problem that the x-window display is loading before the patch? If so, how do I change the order?

I doubt it very much - X loads waaaaayy later than that driver should.
For the 1100 go get the A32 BIOS code, should fix all the problems. I've had Arch, Gentoo and Slack (in addition to XP) running successfully on my work laptop, without the resolution fix.

I already have the A32 bios. I decided to switch back to sarge, but if you know how to get 1024x768 working with etch let me know how you did it. I selected 1024x768 on expert install and that didnt do it so I installed the 915resolution fix which fixed the problem in sarge but doesnt in etch. In sarge I changed the XFConfig-4 (something like that) file to have the patch run on startup, in etch I had to change xorg.conf, the patch would run but the screen would still be small and I couldnt change it to anything else.

Hi, I am trying to make 915resolution work on sarge, but have had no luck. I actually downloaded and installed the .deb package from Debian testing. I know it's there, however, I can't figure out how to configure XFConfig-4 to run it at startup. I see you actually made it work, would you paste the content of your XFConfig-4 for me?

Thanks

I actually switched to Kubuntu, which is based on debian but works magnificently well, has everything from wireless drivers to automatic USB drive detection "what do you want to do with this device?" window. My hibernate, standby and EVERYTHING works!!!!! Its a BILLION times better than the regular debian and has a lot more support. I suggest you dump the base debian and switch to ubuntu as well.

Did you follow the directions in the 915resolution package? You have to configure 915resolution first, and then in the config-4 file you have to write in the 1024x768 in mode 24 (or whichever is set as default mode) but you can do it for all of them just to be sure. Then reboot, the other option of not rebooting and typing something in the command line doesnt work. Sorry for not giving you specifics, I dont have debian anymore.

Ubuntu...

Thanks a lot for answering. Good look with Ubuntu... I'm sticking with Debian. I'll try upgrading to Etch, see how it works... ;-)

If I come up with anything to solve this, I'll post back for other users.

Thanks again.

I have been googling for about two weeks, reading man-pages  and how tos  and this post was the one to solve the hassle at the end  ... Great job. http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/deb...olution+debian

I'll post my XF86Config-4 parameters for anyone looking for information on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (Debian Sarge) in hope it will save time to others...

Thanks again.
