64bit distro needed for newb
 

ok I finaly gave up on ubuntu after 3 days of reading threads all I got was "use search", after I read every login related thread I found I gave up
now Im in the market for a nice 64bit distro that won't give me -to many- errors on isntall, after 7 install attempts of ubuntu I figured I'd try something that doesn't have a b0rked isntaller
gui or not I don't care all that much, just something that works and is reliltivly painless would be nice
gentoo is stil out of my experiance range, maybe in a few months I'll try it out

minus ubuntu, I don't want any help trying to get it to work, I;ve given up on it, I'm sure it;s good but not worth the effort

Debian has a bad reputation, but I actually find it quite easy. It is similar to the Ubuntu installer, but has always woked. It is only in text mode, and it can be somewhat complicated if you have nonstandard hardware, but once it is installed once, you will never need to install it again, even for complete system upgrades. It is also quite easy to use, and very stable. If you have a fast internet connection, you can download a 50MB or 180MB image, and install almost everything from the internet.

Two distributions based off of Slackware which have 64-bit support are:

Slamd64

Frugalware

well fedora core 4 failed to install
as did kubuntu
so it looks like I'm going to try red hat next
