after boot up, plug it in and run dmesg to see what it calls it, look for something like sda1 or sdb1 and see if its showing up. if so you cane mount it manually.

What brand of card reader is it? I have a Lexar 12 in 1 card reader and it works on every distro I've tried it on.On some of them I had to mount it manually, but on mandrake 10.1 it mounts it automatically when I plug it in.

It is a Texas Instruments device:

0000:02:09.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments: Unknown device 8031

unfortunately, we are not that lucky like you with our card reader :-(

With the risk of coming across as lazy, I'll just copy and paste from another post I just made in response to a similar card reader:

Quote:
It seems to be a solution similar to the Texas Instruments PCI1620 PCMCIA/Cardbus kit that also has a piggyback card reader (like the 5-in-1 readers on Compaq/HP R3000 series laptops). This TI device requires a special firmware in order for the card reader to work - the firmware uploader works just fine, but it requires unencrypted firmware. This firmware is not available in its unencrypted form (the Windows driver takes care of decrypting the firmware and uploading it to the device).

This sounds promising! But I'm not sure whether i've understood you right: I have to install unencrypted firmware under windows, and thereafter it should work under linux?

No. The memory in the card reader is volatile - everytime you start the computer you will need to decrypt the firmware on disk and then upload it to the device. It is verified that this works, but one cannot get ahold of unencrypted firmware. Even if someone did it would be questionable legally because of TI's license.
