3D Acceleration on S3 UniChrome Pro

I have an Amilo Pro V2010 laptop with Slackware 10.1 installed on it.
Recently I installed drm in order to get direct rendering on the card.
I installed drm with the via module (graphics chip is VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro), both of which appear in an lsmod.
I get the following (relevant) modules loaded:

X appears to start, because I can press ctrl+alt+backspace and it restarts.
However, I always get a blank screen, as if the monitor has shut down.
I don't get an error from X, it just sits on the blank screen unless i hit ctrl+alt+F6 or something.
Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log I see the following suspicious line:
(WW) VIA(0): [Xv] Unsupported Chipset. X video functionality disabled.

What I'm not sure about is whether this is the problem, because that line comes underneath the Benchmarking video copy. Less is better. section.
Is that a warning about the video copy, or X disabling it's display?

I do get a lot of messages like
(II) VIA(0): Not using default mode "960x720" (bad mode clock/interface/doublescan)

So could it be possible I have invalid settings for my (LCD) monitor?
In xorg.conf I have:
HorizSync set to 31.5 - 50.0
VertRefresh set to 40 - 90.
The only setting in my Display Subsection is
Depth 16
Modes "800x600"

I just noticed that if I start X from my user (from init 3) I get a few strange messages when I try and restart it with ctrl+alt+backspace:

(EE) VIA(0): VIAVidHWDiffInit: Unhandled Chipset.
(EE) VIA(0): Unknown Card-Ids (1734|1078)
(EE) VIA(0): ViaSetPrimaryFIFO: Chipset 4 not implemented

That indicates to me that my card isn't yet supported by the driver.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

I looked at the website, and it looks to me like 3D support is integrated into the CVS but 2D support is not yet integrated. Not sure if this means it isn't supported or you have to apply a patch to the CVS. I've only built that from CVS once so I'm not an expert.

Quite simple really. The VIA\S3 Unichrome chip is not 3d. It is a workstation\corporate lappy chip. Just not for 3d\gaming. Got exactly the same chip in my Acer 3000. No 3d, but, for me that is no problem, as the machine is not for gaming. Actually come to think of it, the same chip is in my Linux Server, once again NOT a gaming box. The chip may work some older stuff, that is not too demanding, but, new stuff? No way, never, no how. Then again, that was last year, things may change tommorrow.
