2 questions about external cdrom drive for compaq armada 1130T w/o

2 questions:

1. I'd like to install Linux on an old compaq armada 1130T, but it lacks a cdrom drive. Before I try to find an external drive, I was wondering whether anyone has any success stories installing Linux on one of these laptops. Its a pretty old machine.

2. Where's a good place on the net to pick up a reasonably priced external cdrom drive with a pcmicia, serial or parallel port interface?
