I've been running RH9 on my Presario 2538cl with success for three months or so (see my install log at linuxpresario.blogspot.com).
I got the idea recently to install the latest kernel.org kernel, so that I can use software suspend. However, if I just use my last (RH 2.4.20-20.9) kernel .config, and compile the kernel (with the acpi patch applied), the kernel freezes on "Checking for new hardware..." upon start-up.
I then tried to do the configure manually, but selecting most of the same options selected in the RH kernel, but it still does the same.
I've not played around with it an awful lot more, I was hoping someone else ran into something similar on a Presario/HP laptop.
How should I change the 2.4.22 kernel configuration to properly work with the Presario?
BTW, has anyone had any success using Software Suspend on their Presario?
I got the same 2538 CL and now on 2.4.22 I can give u my .config file if u want to.
By the way, did u manage to get the external vga to work properly ??
Mine works it just the resolution is wrong, so instead of displaying the whole desktop I need to scrool to go to the edges of my desktop.
I have a different presario model, the 2715us but I do have the 2.4.22 kernel working with ACPI. I was under the assumption that swsup was only up to kernel 2.4.21....I can't find a patch for 2.4.22 on their site.
Keep us posted on your status with the new kernel.

I have the same issue with the VGA out resolution. I've not needed it that much, so I didn't bother with it an awful lot.
I know that the latest XFree86 has a NVidia driver in it that will get you 3D acceleration. This driver might also resolve the VGA out port problems. You'll have to recompile XFree86 though...
Ox, I'd love to take a look at your .config. Please PM me with it, so I can give it a shot. Did you get swsusp to work with it?

Nope, the website is just a little out of date, the latest patches (2.0) is actually against the 2.4.22 kernel.
I'll let you know if I can get it to work, too much "real" work has kept me away from tinkering with it...
